Satgate owners, how often do you hear beacons over the ground from
your neighbors? Fair to filter these out since they didn't actually come
    from RS0ISS?

    example 10 minute pass:

It would be fair to filter them out. They aren't showing up on ariss.net anyway, since those packets you received directly from N6CO don't have "RS0ISS*" in the path indicating they were heard from the ISS. The packets you received directly from N6CO are making it to aprs.fi and other sites that aren't filtering for packets coming from the ISS or other packet satellites like pcsat.aprs.org does.

There used to be a 145.825 MHz gateway a few miles southeast of me, and that station would pick me up directly if I was beaming in that general direction. The operator put in similar filters, allowing packets from ISS, NO-84, and NO-44 to get through, and not pass packets received directly from stations on the ground. For NO-84, you could look for "PSAT", since there are some who aren't using only ARISS as the path for that satellite (using ARISS as the packet path for NO-84 shows up as "PSAT,ARISS*" in the received packets). Beacons from NO-84 are sent as PSAT, and have ARISS in the path without a trailing asterisk. You might also e-mail Steve K4HG, and ask him how he filters packets for ariss.net and pcsat.aprs.org. Then you could follow his lead, if you are only wanting packets from space to go through your gateway. For NO-44, you could look for the presence of W3ADO-1 or PCSAT in those packets.

The other option is to make a filter that specifically blocks N6CO's packets heard directly, but allows them from ISS or NO-84. That would probably be a more complicated filter, but could be an option.

If you are using Direwolf as your satgate software, it has a built-in feature called "satgate". Bob Bruninga requested that this be used to delay non-digipeated packets ("packets heard directly" is the term used) by 15 seconds. This allows a satgate to pick up a digipeat and submit that - making it the "first" packet heard and it will always supersede the directly heard packet.

I bet there are similar controls in other igating software.

Ah, yes, just delay terrestrial packets -- elegant! I suppose giving aprsIS "too much" and let them filter is better than inconsistent filtering at the gates. Above all, if this was an emergency message or similar, I'd want it to get through no matter how it arrived.

I don't use direwolf for satgate, but rather "ygate" https://github.com/craigerl/ygate/ which works with Yaesu radios. I'm the developer so this is why I'm asking these silly spec/convention questions.

Consider reading the documentation for direwolf. (if you haven't, already) I am absolute blown away by how much time and energy WB2OSZ put into documenting all of the inner workings of the software. Might give you some ideas (including how to improve his ideas) for your own software.

If I ever get my hands on an appropriate yaesu, I'll give your software a try!

Hi everyone, as you may know there's no iss igate anywhere in the Philippines, that's the reason why my digipeated packet from ISS never been into ariss.net cause there's no station to gate it. I can confirm iss has received me because I can see from the digipeated packet that it has RS0ISS*. Now I just finished building an igate running direwolf using raspberry pi zero and sdr-rtl dongle, so obviously it's RX only. I set it up to receive on 145.825mhz. It's working as I'm writing this comment, as I have seen it decodes UITMS Birds-2 beacon. Although it's not perfect yet. I have been looking to the same solution how to filter out the packets intended for iss, and only allow digipeated packet with RS0ISS*. Because everytime I transmit packet to ISS, my iGate picks it up and ported it right away to aprs.fi. Now when the digipeated signal from iss arrived to my igate it somehow neglects it because it might see it as duplicate.

I hope I can also find a solution. Satgate owners, direwolf enthusiast please help.

*Apology if my english wasn't that good.

    Jharwin,

I think I just found the solution. I need to tinker this a bit. Thanks for pointing me to direwolf documentation!

Just put the following line in your configuration:

    Code:
    SATGATE 15
It will delay all "directly heard" packets by 15 seconds. Any digipeated packets will be processed immediately. This way your digipeats picked up by your satgate will have priority.
