    Please see for yourselves at:
    http://www.ariss.net/

KE6BLR-40 sat gate is corrupting all packets by appending their "banner ad" to every packet gated by their custom satgate software.

Wholly inappropriate, no matter how altruistic their organization is or thinks they are IMHO.

    Hi!

I e-mailed KE6BLR last month about this, with no response. After seeing how his gateway was acting tonight (not only appending text to received packets, but also pumping bogus packets from KE6BLR-3 into the APRS Internet system when ISS was away from North America), I e-mailed both KE6BLR and the owner of ariss.net (K4HG).

It looks like the bogus traffic stopped at 0216 UTC. We will have to wait and see if that KE6BLR-40 gateway is still sending traffic to the Internet, and - if so - if the gateway is still altering received packets.

BTW APRS gateways are supposed to pass along packets as received. It is unfortunate that a gateway is configured in this manner, appending text to received packets.

agreed 100%, thanks for making the effort.

if education and diplomacy fails, let us know here, so we can petition to add filters on APRSIS.

    Wow. That is appalling.

K4HG can only control what goes on his servers - findu.com, ariss.net, and pcsat.aprs.org, for example. His servers are now blocking anything with that extra tagline from appearing. This doesn't stop KE6BLR-40 from polluting the wider APRS Internet, but we shouldn't see those packets going forward on ariss.net in particular.

I just checked ariss.net, and all of those packets from KE6BLR-40 with the tagline are now gone. Thanks to Steve K4HG for quick work on a late Saturday night to clean up the KE6BLR-40 trash!

I like their 1990s use of frames on their web site. Is this group sanctioned by NASA or ARISS?

I don't know. I haven't been able to get a reply from KE6BLR. His group had an ARISS contact last month.

Frames on a web site... I hear Geocities calling... :)

ARISS contacts are cool but using their logos and NASA logos to self promote aren't quite so cool. At least they aren't using Tang in their self promotion. I guess I just don't understand some folks. I'm all about driving people to this niche of the hobby. W4AQT and KM4LAO were on a net this evening together and there was a lot of talk of satellites and trying to attract 'new blood' which equals new grids for everyone but there was no self promotion such as this.

If it wasn't for Robert and his Dad, half you guys on the West Coast wouldn't appear on the APRS map...besides what does their experiment hurt:confused:??? In the short time that he has been an active Ham, he's done more to promote the hobby then all you Sat:eek: Police combined...

It corrupts the APRS Internet. The packets with the extra text added by the KE6BLR-40 gateway puts duplicate information into the system, since almost all of the KE6BLR-40 packets were being received by another gateway around the same time. And gateways are supposed to pass the packets to the Internet as received, not with additional text. Gateways add themselves to the packet path, but they aren't supposed to append or change the text contained in the packet.

Since Steve Dimse K4HG purged those packets from his servers (ariss.net, pcsat.aprs.org, and findu.com), you can't see them anymore in those places. Here's what it looked like last night. First the packets...

    ISS_packets.jpg

You can see packets from N7NEV at the bottom of the screenshot, where he sent a message to KC7BXS-7. One was heard by N6DAN-2 without extra text, then the other was heard by KE6BLR-40 and text was added to the packet. Your packet at 0148 UTC was received by a gateway out here, and after that a steady string of bogus packets from KE6BLR-3 as the ISS moved away from North America. When Steve saw this, and other screenshots I sent him, he took action to block anything with the extra text from getting to his servers.

    Have a good afternoon...
