No, for ordinary c band work we used a "standard A" dish, 100 foot in diameter.

Of course we were sending about 7000 or so full duplex voice circuits to 40 or so countries... Each dish...middle dish was a 60 foot ku band (14ghz up 11ghz down)

    .....

But if everybody would cooperate a bit, a simple vertical would work fine for ham leo birds...

What do you suppose the astronauts on the iss use?

Here the case is made for a 10dbi antenna:

A quote from the link "more than adequate"

But then, where is the fun of satellite operating if you can't step on the other guy.

I have never in my life come across so many people in one place that can distort, twist, misconstrue and flat out not comprehend written english. In no way, shape, form or fashion am I trying to dictate who I hear or do not hear. I was simply stating that if the bird is busy I do not try to make a contact with someone I may have talked to the day before. Leave room for a new guy to jump in is my theory anyway.

BTW I am already grouchy. :D:p

No Glen, they are NOT beginners, and they know EXACTLY what they are doing.

It's not a technical challange, it's just something to $pend money on.

Transmitting 20,30,40 or more Decibels of uplink than required is lid behavior.

Edit: you do understand that it is only slightly more difficult to work a leo fm satellite than it is to kerchunk a repeater?

Received from the ISS on a $50 earth station:

    Uv5r
    1/4 wavelength whip
    Trackphone from walmart
    Free tracking software (app store)
    Free decoder software (app store)

Just held the trackphone up to the ht, no fancy interface cable :)

Received with a HP laptop with copy and paste function. Easy peasy. Don't see any issue here...
