OK.. making progress after some good suggestions after my last post. NOW I need to tackle the replacement of the AC cord. No room to install a new plug in the unit so have to hard wire in a new AC cord. Was going to remove the existing plug and wire it there. Problem is the transformer. I need to remove it so I have room to work. BUT can't reach the nuts on the chassis so I can remove it. Any suggestions??? Or do I just struggle with the transformer?

Just struggle with the transfomer, the more you leave alone better it will be. I have two very well built 401s. One had lost 40 meters but found a lug that the assembler forgot to solder. Took a very long time to find. From my view point, it looked solid and only moved when I touched it...
