Using technical terms correctly is a big step forward in being able to really understand what is being written about antennas (or other technical subjects). For the beginner, here is a simple explanation of these three terms:

Resonance is a noun, the state of being resonant. "The antenna must be pruned for resonance."

Resonate is a verb, indicating action. "When we prune an antenna, we resonate it."

Resonant is an adjective, giving a description. "Once the antenna is pruned, it is a resonant antenna."

    Hope this helps.

Now if we could just stop equating resonance to 50 ohms. "My antenna isn't resonant. It has an SWR50 of 1.5"

Then if we could stop equating an SWR dip to resonance. "I resonated my antenna. I got the dip down to 1.8"

Likewise with destinated, destinant, and destinance.

"I'm destinated to the Cinnabon at the next rest area. When I get there I will be destinant. I will have achieved destinance."

I wish this could be a sticky at the top of this forum!

One of my biggest pet peeves reading various posts here and it happens every day, along with improper usage of "to" and "too," "affect" and "effect," "73's" or "best 73's" and perhaps the most cringe-worthy to my mind, "advice" and "advise."

    Thank you, Dan!

Maybe this is why the Wouff Hong was invented (somebody should have set that guy straight before the QSL went to press...)

I'm going to lose it if people don't stop improperly using "loose".

Made worse, I’m sure, by our fellow A.M.A.T.E.U.R.S. who know better, but keep their tongues firmly in cheek at all times.

Yes! I know what you mean, Ted. I feel the exact same way every time I see

    "New to HAM here..."

The things we have to put up with trying to help other hams get the advice and info they need, sheesh!
