Imagine a station I the uk being able to use 1kw legally everyday unlike some who use power well above the 400w limit illegally almost every day ... 73

That is no different than anywhere else in the world. I know contesters & DXers that run Henry 8k amps full tilt here in the states. It's always been this way.

The SARL is in a quite pressing need of new licencees/members, as there is a news item

    http://www.southgatearc.org/news/20...cels-2100-ham-radio-licences.htm#.XOFH10gzY2w

which says that 2100 licences have been recently cancelled by the regulator due to non-payment of fees. 2100 is about 1/3 of the total amateur radio population in South Africa.

From what can be deduced from the very sparse IARU information, SARL has about 3000 members with an average age of 55, which interesting enough is about 10 years younger than national societies in Europe.

Almost all amateur radio societies of today suffer from an ageing and shrinking membership.

It's great to sign people up, have them take the tests, but the most important thing is to get them active. I notice here in the states, there are blocks of call signs that expire all at one time. I think the reason they came in on a tech licence and never upgraded and it's over. If the FT-8 mode gets guy and girls into the hobby that's great, but we need to upgrade folks, get them into SSB, CW, and all of the other modes. For me (just me) FT-8 reminds me of chat rooms on AOL in the early 80's and does nothing for me, but that's me.

So you are saying that you are aware of individuals participating in contests who are running 8000 watts? Which contests?

Operators who run more than the legal limit are cheaters. Cheaters don't actually win. They are losers.

FT8, what's that? I'm into actually talking to other like-minded ARO's. Swapping call signs while you are in the shower, on the pot, or in the kitchen is not why I joined the club.

Then it is no matter to you. Besides, from your obvious lack of knowledge, it's way above your comprehension. I guess you also don't use digital repeaters, work DX, and your only use for a computer is to show your ignorance.
