    Being a real ham has nothing to do with code proficiency.

    However, real hams:

    -Expend the time and effort to learn new things, to enhance not only their own knowledge or position, but to contribute to the hobby in general;

    -Assemble collections* of books, magazines and data in order to achieve the above, and learn something new every single day as a result of these efforts;

    -Realize that ham radio has nothing to do with hardware, budget or money; it's the love of the art and its continued advancement;

    -Try hard to become excellent communicators, as the very hobby is based on this;

    -And give back more than they take from the hobby and their fellow hams.

    (*It doesn't cost a nickel to do so. Most of my amateur radio library, hundreds of texts, was garnered from libraries willing to give away old volumes. Yes, I actually had to travel to many, and ask, over a period of several years.)
