I call Monday my "net night". I try to participate in a local (greater Boston) SSB net, a 2M traffic net, and a 2M radio club net.

I have received at least one radiogram from them, and my husband has received a couple (confirmations of POTA qsos). They handle quite a bit of traffic overall including the "Welcome new ham" types of messages.

Due to my attempts at consistent participation in these nets, I have expanded my personal community of local ham buddies. I find hearing the same folks checking in and participating comforting, and actually strive to be that type of consistent, reliable voice in the ham community myself.

Antiquated or not, I would hate to see the traffic nets disappear. I think one of the most important "public service" components of ham radio is not necessarily responding to the call of impending doom, but rather being a friendly voice that the more fragile amongst us can reliably look forward to knowing are out there just in case they ever need help.

    On that, Happy Thanksgiving Zedders!
