Congrats to Ukraine for capturing the latest Russian tank (T-90M). Below is a picture--from twitter apparently, and posted in Ukraine, of a T-90M with 'camo coating'.

In fact, the 'camo' is actually an example of "shag-stealth", where carbon fiber(in fabric) nap is used as resonant absorbers of radar. Or, if you are naive, you will visually confuse the tank for a gray, hairy BOULDER... where boulders don't exist

    NOT.

    Origin of shag-stealth?

What happens if the carbon fibers get wet or dirty?

Not much. The spectrum is highly ohmic with a broad absorption at the radar band(s). Wetness/detritus just shifts the resonance from one part of the absorption bump to another part of the absorption bump. Fairly low Q...

Stealth on tanks is stupid in a wooded setting. You have a radar map prior to tanks, and the tanks then show up as black blobs on radar. In the woods. Oooh! A target!!

Ukraine ain't New Hampshire... no grey or black boulders in the woods.

The Microwave Journal did a recent audio interview you can find here. Also includes pictures, and references.

I called stealth metasurfaces the 'equivalent to bumpstocks for handguns'. Too easy to make and use and an invitation to conflict. The new patent makes stealth metasurfaces much easier to detect.
