Is this guy affiliated with qrz.com? He wants me to go my qrz.com account to opt out of his spam.

Or does he just harvest info from qrz for his own purposes?

    Bill,

This application is not affiliated with QRZ.

The program appears to work by using the senders XML subscription and logbook data to send messages. It is a downloaded application that the user must run on their local computer and their own personal email account to send the cards.

The "optout" procedure they are describing is something they have come up with on their own. When their application requests callsign data from our system it checks the QSL Info field (which traditionally contains instructions for QSLing) for the keyword "NOEQSL" and will not generate an email QSL if it finds it. QRZ cannot guarantee or enforce such an opt out. The only way for you to confidently opt out of receiving such messages would be to remove the public email from your callsign record - even then though you may still find that you receive these messages as some logging software will pull information like that from past records in a users logbook.

Overall the staff at QRZ are not fans of these services/applications but there is clearly some users out there that are quite passionate about them. One of the things we do personally is use filters to corral messages like this into specific folders so that we may review they if and when we want to. Here is a link that explains how this can be done for GMail https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6579?hl=en - I am sure other platforms have similar options.

The program itself checks for "NOEQSL" in QSL Info field which is provided by QRZ, if found, it will not send e-mail. You make contract with hams and there is a assumption that you may want confirmation. You even provide the address to sent the confirmation by snail mail, or e-mail. There is nothing unsolicited about it. QRZ provided you a means to still provide the data, but request no e-mail. The program provides the same opportunity to Opt-out. Take two minutes and solve your problem, so many others want confirmation of uploads. For each user that does not want e-mails, thousands of praises and thank you emails are received. Hundreds of my users have joined or update to XML privileges on QRZ to use the program.

Why use "NOEQSL"? Suppose I am a user of eQSL, which is a service that doesn't send unsolicited email. Might that give the impression that I do not want to receive eQSL confirmations? I wonder how the owner of eQSL will feel about this. That tag you recommend is going to show up on my QRZ page whenever someone looks up my call sign.

They have their own opt-out, which you have not opted out of. I can clearly see you accepted eQSL from your QSL Info field, as well as the checkbox. You could add QSOCardCreator="NOEQSL" if you prefer. My app would still see it and honor your wishes.

True enough, but not seen unless someone bothers to scroll all the way to the bottom of the details page, while your method appears on the main page. To me, what appears on the main page is what I do, not what I don't do. Just saying.

My method is 3 lines above at the bottom of the page. They do not even have to go to your page, as that QSL Info field is downloaded with the XML, read, and honored within my application.
