Why is it if I search for IC-705, I receive no results across the entire board, but searching for 705 yields results? I'm not selecting title only or a specific forum either. If I search for "IC-705" (with quotes), it works though.
It's because the XenForo forums software that QRZ uses employs a variation of Boolean Logic. IC-705 will result in the software trying to subtract 705 from IC which of course will not result in anything meaningful. If for some reason you put in IC+705 it would try to add them and so on. Searching 705 will find it - as well as any other gear that might have 705 in the part number. You can also use quotes: "IC-705" will disable the minus sign and render it as the hyphen that it is. I assumed it was doing something like that. For fun, I tried 706-1 but it didn't show any results; I expected 705. What odd behavior, though, as search should be a simple string.
QRZ doesn't write the forums code and it's closed-source at that level so there's not much QRZ can do to improve the search function. Possibly down the road with an upgrade... Dave W7UUU
I wasn't expecting QRZ to modify any code, Dave. Just a comment on how some code's behavior can be strange.
