    OK another reason too....

Its stealthy and quiet. I can operate incognito with a headset and not disturb others (the YL) when I am up very late and she is sleeping in the bedroom where the radio is located.
The alternative would be she moves into another bedroom? I move the radio?
Naw...... too lazy for all of the above!

Losing the specific "novice band" was a greater loss than losing the license class itself. I guess its (was) impossible to separate the two. Many of my Novice contacts were 'upper classmen'. Just because you passed the 13 wpm test didn't mean you could carry on a QSO at 13 wpm so it was a good outlet for them as well.
Its a long gone part of history and won't be coming back.

I fondly remember working some of ham radio's upper classmen inside the late 1960s novice sub-bands. It was always a big thrill for me to have these experienced folks working us noobs and encouraging us on.

The old Novice Roundup was great fun, too. I dragged my feet to take the General test, and in doing so I was able to operate two Novice Roundups as WN1MBK. By NR two, I had long since acquired a 20 WPM sticker for my W1AW Qualifying Run certificate - and there were quite a few other novices cranking away close to and over 20 WPM that second time around!

    Good times! Great memories!

I had two of those - well actually XYLs...

...not at the same time, though ;)

Nowadays I find non-live-in YLs far less costly. YMMV.

The other nice thing about it was that misteaks were OK. No one ever dogged me out for making a mistake, like messing up their name or call sign, we just corrected each other and carried on.
