It probably depends on where you live.

You can monitor 146.52 for months here and never hear a peep.

In the greater NY or LA areas that's probably not true.

Besides the gentleman's agreement/common courtesy aspect, isn't one of the frequencies involved with the Wilderness Protocol 146.52 ? ;)

I've driven across the USA while scanning 146.52, among other frequencies, and there are certainly places where it's pretty quiet.

But those places tend to have quite a few other quiet simplex frequencies, too.

Ignorance? even if they know (and/or have been informed) that 146.52 is supposed to be a CALLING frequency, and not an operating frequency?

Here in Los Angeles .52 has become a playground for just about anything. Guys coming up on the frequency using DMR or P25 is just rude and irritating. Then there's the guys that crawl up on a local hill and spend six hours calling summits on the air. I used to listen to .52 and it was actually pretty nice. People would call out, make contact, and shift to .550 or some other simplex for a QSO. Now it's just one step above a CB.

The ONLY thing .52 should be used for is analog FM voice. Period. If you want to do P25, DMR, SSTV, or any other mode, go somewhere where those people hang out. It's extremely rude to transmit something that sounds like noise on an actively monitored channel. This is just common sense, and common courtesy.
