We at QRZ headquarters received an email from LOTW today regarding a planned outage of their service. We are posting some text from that email here as we know that many of you use the QRZ Logbook in concert with LOTW to log contacts. "As a part of the ongoing modernization of the ARRL systems infrastructure, LoTW will be receiving major upgrades to the operating system it is running on, the relational database system it uses to store and access logbook and awards data, and server hosting, where it will be fully migrated to the cloud. These changes will, among other improvements, ensure LoTW performance needs can be better met based on user demand. LoTW will be unavailable from June 27 to July 2, 2025, to complete these upgrades. We will bring LoTW back online if it is available sooner than July 2." Please be aware that this planned outage by LOTW will affect QRZ users with LOTW integration and will prevent transferring QSOs to and from LOTW from QRZ for the duration of the outage. We will be disabling the controls for LOTW imports and exports until such time as we become aware that the LOTW service is back online.
It's kind of silly that they couldn't wait until after Field Day (June 28-29) to do this. Minor inconvenience for most that rely on LoTW, but sounds like the update will be worth it when completed.
Who knows, maybe more FD groups will upload to LoTW as a result of this action? It can be a challenge getting FD contacts confirmed for awards.
Yes they sent the email out to members who received their email alerts. Most upgrade programs, I've been involved with, have parallel programs running. So you don't have down time, the IT techs can interrogate the new system and wait until the last minute to change over. After they have confirmed the Integrity of the new system, no need to be down for hours or days. Even on Band-Aid upgrade/repairs, this is done a lot of times. When's the last time any modern business has been down for a week, changing their system over? Hopefully this goes good.
I absolutely agree, I emailed them asking why they couldn't wait till Monday to start this upgrade? Let's just say, it was obvious, they didn't want to hear it.
You can always manually upload your field day contacts when the system is fully functional with all needed upgrades and fixes...
I agree, there is no need for the system to be down for days. And it makes no sense to have it down on field day either. Poor planning on ARRL's part.
The response I got emailed back when I suggested they do this on Monday the 30th, not FD, was the typical corporate response, FD is an excellent time to do the upgrade, because everyone is in the Field! Enjoy FD, upload your log next week.
