Having had its official starting point when the country was a commonwealth of the United States back in 1932, the national amateur radio association celebrated its 85th year. The venue of the celebration was at the Marikina Hotel and Convention Center. Attendance exceeded expectation as over 700 names were tallied on the sign up sheets. Not all were licensed hams. About 116 of the attendees took the Philippine amateur radio licensing tests. Another batch also took the FCC's VEC administered exam.
This event caps the year long drive of PARA in making amateur radio known to the masses. Holding a monthly ham radio orientation seminar for entry-level hams, PARA has experienced numerous SRO (standing room only) seminars. Without a doubt amateur radio is growing in our country. Non-traditional sources of ham radio licensees have cropped up. The biggest of which are the motorcycle groups. Next are the schools who have been clamoring for the orientation seminar.
The rise in the numbers of ham radio operators has been due to the raised awareness of everyone about disaster preparedness. The Philippines, being located in the Ring of fire, is almost always under threat from typhoons, volcanic eruptions, heavy rains, earthquakes, etc. Because of these and the predictable collapse of the communications infrastructure, much interest was generated in the need to keep communications lines up and running. The country's experience with Super typhoon Haian, magnified the role and capability of amateur radio in the public's eye. Fortunately the National Telecommunications Commission came to PARA's rescue when they invited PARA, to hold office at their building and use the facilities for training, free of charge.
PARA is very grateful because the uptick in licensed amateur radio operators has been meaningful and impacts the country's ability to respond. Recent changes like improvement of repeater capabilities in numerous areas have been realized. Still a long way to full integration of amateur radio but big strides are being made.
