Who knew that Star Trek Communicators were BOAT ANCHORS?

This capture is from the 0:03:34 mark of the very first Star Trek: Pilot episode "The Cage"

Never noticed this before - but the very first Communicator used a pair of Raytheon CK-xxx style miniature TUBES!!!

HUGE phenolic rotary switch as well with NOTHING soldered to any of the visible terminals - can't really tell what's in the little PCB at the bottom but probably some early computer detritus they hand lying around (it was a very low-budget show at first).

Note the obviously hand-soldered wire hinge for the lid with its very poor alignment!! I must assume the lid was also the antenna?

No clue how they derived B+ for the plates....

    Fun stuff :):)

Star Trek is included on the basic Netflix package - just search "Season 1: Ep. 1"

The Federation went with tubes because they gave the audio a much warmer sound.

I really would have asked for a props tech with better soldering skills.... really surprised that Star Fleet bought off on this contract of devices!!:eek:

They actually show a CLOSEUP of it - I did not zoom the image - THEY did when they filmed it!!!

Note the GLARING screw on the left that "just wouldn't go all the way in" :D:D

Poor quality control. Who’d have thought Baofeng would still be around in the 23rd century?

And the captain (first episode being the pilot is pre-Shatner) actually has a 19" black and white TV built into his cabin!!!

    ALSO a tube-based boat anchor!!!

I'm really glad to know that BW TV will come back in style in the 23rd Century - I enjoyed it a bit as a kid :)

More boat anchors in sight.... can anyone make out what these are? The crew just arrived at the planet where Captain Pike walks into the stranded crew encampment

No doubt there’s a turntable and an 8-track player in there, too. :D

Pretty compact rig. Must be for QRP portable ops. Didn’t they bring the code requirement back for the subspace bands?

Tubes survive emp better. After all, weren't they getting blasted with all sorts of energy weapons? That's why. :p
