Governor Tina Kotek has issued a proclamation designating June as "Amateur Radio Month" in Oregon. Oregon, with a population of just over 4 million, has over 20,000 amateur radio operators. That's the third highest per capita number of hams in the United States...and with good reason. In addition to having wide open spaces and vast wilderness areas without cellular coverage, Oregon's natural beauty masks a legacy of earthquakes, tsunami, floods, landslides, volcanoes, wildfires, snowstorms, ice storms, windstorms, and other natural hazards. Oregonians are well aware of the many hazards nature has in store, and as a citizenry are particularly interested in being prepared and helping each other in times of need. Field Day (June 27-28) is a perfect opportunity to practice our skills. Oregon also hosts the SeaPac NW division convention June 5-7, and we have our first crack at being W1AW/7 from June 3-9. Governor Kotek has recognized the importance of ham radio and its practitioners to the community by declaring June 2026 as Amateur Radio Month. Oregon has been having a very dry spring. We collectively hope that our summer is not consumed with providing emergency communications for wildfires, but if it is, we'll be ready. Scott N7JI ARRL Oregon Section Manager
Yup! We're certainly aware of the hazards. Thanks for Amateur Radio month. Maybe we can convince The Governor to get her Amateur Radio License!
And Recognize all the pota operators setting up in the state parks, etc... Field day is okay, but pota is year round. More visible to the publics eye...
