I treasure a 15m SSB QSO with him. Me:. What are you doing way up here!?!? John: I just go with whatever is working. He was so loud and clear, I thought he was local. RIP good man.
I eyeballed John a number of times over the years. He was instrumental in getting me on 160/80 meter with four squares. When I built my large European curtain last year he was my first Contact. He will be missed but his Publications Will Go On. 74
I worked John on 40m and 80m CW. I remember after the first QSO remarking to my wife, "I just worked the guy who wrote this book" Low Band DXing. We both thought that was pretty neat. Our hobby has, unfortunately, lost some really nice and knowledgeable people this year. RIP ON4UN.
Truly lighthouse and pioneer of the radio. I keep his book on my reference bookshelf, and QSOs in my memory. Thank you John.
Very nice gentleman on the air, Kept his call active on my DX spotter. A loss to the WW amateur community.
I had the pleasure of meeting ON4UN on the air many times and in person at Dayton Hamvention. Really good person and great ham. RIP John and a great loss to Amateur Radio. 73 de AC5O Jeff
My Marine Corps compatriot (Jim, WO7V) and I ran into John by chance at the 2011 Dayton Hamvention. When we asked a passerby to snap our photo, I told him John begged to have his photo taken with me. At that both the passerby and John gawked at my call letters and were bewildered. (Just about anyone would be. We had a good laugh.
R.I.P my friend John. "Goodbyes simply means I'll miss you until we meet again." Thanks for be my elmer in lowband dx'ing. You can send your condolences to ON4UN.SK@gmail.com Marc ON4MA
I am pretty sure he was my first ON. I rather imagine that's also true for others. The first few times I worked him I had not read his book yet. The first time I worked him after that I thanked him for writing it. We so rarely get to thank one of our favorite authors.
R.I.P John, thanks for all the wonderful info on low band dxing and contacts we had over the years. Those that new him will sadly miss him.
Thank you for everything John ! R.I.P ! A great loss to Amateur Radio worldwide ! 73 4 ever. Bernie ON4AT - OP1B
