    Tidbit: I don't know how typical this is nor the WH cost, but when I visited an apartment in Tokyo long ago the total available power was 100 volts and 10 amps.

    Maybe the need for efficiency was one of the reasons microwave ovens caught on so quickly in the orient.

    San Rafael is far enough north to usually avoid the Santa Ana winds. But down south (LA, San Diego, etc.), even if you lived in La Jolla or Redondo, those oven blasts in September and October would push the mercury to 101 or 103 and maybe down to 77 at night. Ocean breeze be damned with those temps - plus the 25 - 35 mph winds were off the desert - not much cooling to be had.
