REALTIME BAND CONDITIONS WEB SITE <http://www.bandconditions.com>:
The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365 actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called "HF Ionospheric Interferometry"
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.

    SILENT KEYS (SK).......
    * Reg, VE7IG, became a Silent Key (SK) on the July 24th, after only
a few days of being seriously ill. Reg was a very well-known DXer,
Antarctic Hunter and IOTA chaser, island activator and former IOTA
card checker. Reg was 80 years old. OPDX and its readers would like
to send out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of VE7IG.

    * Lola, N4KAI, wife of Wayne, W4MPY (QSLMAN), and part of the printing
team passed away a few weeks ago.

SX10, GREECE (Special Event). Members of the Thessaloniki's Amateur Group
(TARG) will be active as SX10HF between August 25th and September 8th.
Activity is to celebrate the tenth consecutive year the TARG has hosted

TX5, AUSTRAL ISLANDS (Update/Low Band enthusiasts.....). Bob, K4UEE,
sent out the following: The 5 man team going to TX5T, Raivavae Island
in the Austral group are pleased to announce that they will be QRV on
all bands 160m thru 10m. (no permit for 60M). We should arrive August
    13th and depart the 22nd.
The decision has been made to use 18m Spider poles to support a 160m
Tee and an 1/4 vertical on 80m. Power output will be limited to 500w.
There are plans for receive antennas as well.
On TopBand, our frequency allotment begins at 1830 KHz, so look for
us just above that and likely listening up most of the time, but down
for our friends in JA. We also expect to be QRV on FT8 around 1838-1840.
Check out our website for additional information:

    VP6D Ducie Island 2018 DX-pedition (OC-182) -- We are honored to have
received a grant from the ARRL's Colvin Award Committee. The Colvin Award
is funded by an endowment established by Lloyd D. Colvin, W6KG (SK). More
information can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/colvin-award-grants
We appreciate the ARRL's confidence in, and support of, VP6D.
We're pleased to announce that Rob Fanfant, N7QT, has joined the VP6D
team. Rob is a DX-pedition veteran whose most recent project was VK9MA
Mellish Reef in 2017. Previous projects include: VK9WA Willis Island,
Manihiki E51MQT, Montserrat VP2MQT, Austral Islands (TX5Z), Christmas
    Island, Australia(VK9AN), San Andres (5J0X , HK0/N7QT), Sint Maarten
    (PJ7/N7QT), Saba (PJ6/N7QT), Austral Islands TX5D), Saint Lucia (J6/N7QT),
and Saint Lucia (J6/N7QT). We think you will agree that Rob is well
qualified for the project and we are happy to add him to the team.
As we march towards our departure date of October 16th the project is
on schedule. A VP6D working group is currently in Northern California
preparing the equipment for shipment to Braveheart in New Zealand. On
August 3rd, we had the pleasure of meeting Eric Swartz, WA6HHQ, at the
Elecraft factory where we were introduced to the Elecraft team and toured
the factory. We then accepted 8 complete K3s stations for use at VP6D.
Thanks to Elecraft and all our corporate sponsors for their ongoing
Today we are continuing the tasks of integrating the radios, computers,
software, configuring the network and preparing the shipping cases. We
plan an end to end test, from the keyboard to the BGAN to the log server
in the cloud. We expect to have the equipment ready for the customs broker
    by Weds, Aug 7th.
Thanks for your continued interest and support of VP6D.
