Best product on the planet - "Odor Mute" made by small company in Minnesota. Dry powder, mix up a batch for use with
warm water. One package will give you enough solution for several years. Not cheap, but far more economical than buying
special solution at pet-supply stores whereby you're paying for 98% water-weight.
Non-toxic and is organic enzymes which chemically break-down the skunk-spray chemical components (mercaptans)
My dog who was the best woodchuck and skunk hunter in New England, regularly tangled with animals who occasionally
beat her to the punch.
My experience with tomato juice was consistently disappointing.
Odor Mute also cleans organic stains such as blood and other fluids off carpets safely.

Addendum: Yes, huge skunk die-off in R.I. around 1999 because of endemic rabies. Still the
only animal we don't see very much around here.
Mrs U found a recipe online using hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and liquid soap that got 97% of the STENCH in one treatment.
Back to the regularly scheduled thread.
Just like WZ7U's Mrs U, W4HRL's Mrs HRL, stands by the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and liquid soap treatment for skunks.
We have had two skunk experiences (different dogs, ten years apart) and had success with that particular formula. Knocks down the odor a bunch until the dog gets wet again. Then you get a little whiff of old mister skunk. Time (and the growing out of old fur) finally does the trick.

Thanks Mrs. HRL for the validation. It's all true Mike, and it looks like there is a bit of fur you get to wash out should your dog get similarly unlucky. Best wishes
If all else fails, paint might be your best option.
