    • An excuse to use your radio
    • An excuse to hear who can hear who at a given time/frequency/mode
    • An excuse to hear what other people have to say
    • A way to find who is in your area
    • A way to find people who may have a common interest
    • Some people are super mic shy and for them it's active participation
    • If you aren't there, you won't have a chance at any of the above
    • A reason for many to complain and judge people, which for them is what radio seems to mean
If you hold radio as something that has to have a specific defined meaning or utility, radio will become lonely and boring. Just find what aspect of radio suits you and go for it.

I caught the tail end of one yesterday. Not even sure what it was for. The controller asked for more check ins, just needed 2 more. I checked in just to boost his numbers.

I once checked into a "friendship net."

It was all about people introducing themselves to each other. Net control said, "Tell us about yourself, but make it short."

"Okay. I started out as a child, and now I'm talking to you. Over."

What is negative traffic? I hear ops checking in and saying negative traffic.

That's official jargon for 'no traffic'. Goes with the vest.

Maybe someone can post a pic of the button and/or patch they received for their vest for passing positive traffic. ;)

Gotta get that pause between "This is" and "NN4RH" just right. Long enough to annoy at least half the net, but short enough that they don't ban you.

This is ... NN4RH. Negatory Traffic. What a hoot !!!

Just use the appropriate phonics for your callsign. I have been chastised on the air and even by email for using Italy Oscar America.
I do understand though, since many net controls are newer haMs and the "proper" phonics are easier to log when everyone is using them.
Join in, the least that you'll get is mic experience and practice saying your callsign in front of an audience :p
