As some of you may have seen, Yaesu recently started running their new popular 2m HT, the VX170, Waterproof.

Sure, that's nice, but how do you tell if *your* version is waterproof? Does anyone know?

    Thanks,
    Ray.

edit: im not looking for smart-a$$ed answers like "drop it in water" [IMG]

If you open it, it should have a rubber gasket around the case inside.

But opening it voids your warranty, so basically you'll have to go by what they say.

Based on tests with the VX-7R, I can reasonably conclude that Yaesu does not lie about this capability.

This is not a smart-a$$ed answer.

I was thinking they were waterproof from the start [IMG]
I'm not tring to be a smart a$$ but, try an e-mail to Yaesu asking at what serial number they started water proofing them at. Just say you are about to purchase one and want to make sure it's the newer waterproof version.

ITS BULLSHIT, YOU SAID YOU WERE LOOKING FOR SMART A$$ ANSWERS, "DROP IT IN WATER",
I DROPPED MINE IN THE BATHTUB JUST NOW,
AND LEFT IT FOR AN HOUR, IT DOESNT WORK NOW
NOTHING IS WATERPROOF, I HAVE BOUGHT SO MANY PRODUCTS THAT SAY WATER PROOF, THEY ARE REALLY JUST, WATER RESISTANT!

    Actually I am just kidding,
I really doubt it is water proof,
    Nothing is really water proof,
    just water resistant.
I mean, my handhelds arent water proof,
not even water resistant, I can take them in the rain.
    and it doesnt hurt them
but really if you want waterproof, get those ziplock radio cases!.

I suspect water resistance is more like it. Kind of like watches. Carry it in the rain.. Ok..

Talk underwater.. Well, are you planning on doing that?

Yes that is smarta$$ed.. I refuse to give up that right!

    Hello.

The test for the VX-7R is to put the thing in aa aquarium for an hour, or 11, and let it operate.
I was in NYC a while back and kept teasing the UAE ambassadors aide, calling him "Me Why".
He grabbed my talkie and put it in the aquarium.
Right before the last days prayers I got the talkie out, rinsed it off, and let it dry, and started up with "Me Why" again.
To this day, #6J79xxxx works without fault.
The prior talkie, a Kenwood TH-F6A, was thrown at a wall and simply needed a new case due to all the scratches, #3090xxxx.
It has also been dunked in the very same aquarium but was only left there for perhaps a minute at the most.
No ill effects for the radios from water.
