New RAC Section - YUK

In July 2025, the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) announced that the number of Sections will increase by 1 from Jul 01st 2025, to include YUK. The old Territories (TER) section has been divided into two parts. Radio amateurs in the Yukon Territory (province abbreviation: YT) are now located in the YUK section, whilst Radio Amateurs in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut continue to be located in the Territories (TER) section. The change was made at the request of Radio Amateurs in Yukon who volunteered to organise a distinct section for that territory. It was announced in RAC's journal, The Canadian Amateur (TCA), for July/August 2025.

2 more territories to get! This field day will be a fun one. It's gonna be tougher than ever to get cleensweep now , but who said cleaning was easy?

 

What is the status of Nunavut? VE8 and VY0 are in one section?

 

Correct. They are TER.

 

There may be a new country up there, Alberta Independence is gaining ground.

 

Not sure “YUK” is a good abbreviation, IMHO. Would not “YK” work? Just wonderin'.

Back to the future.

Yukon had been a mult for many decades on sweepstakes. Probably the hardest one to work.

But good for the hams of Yukon to do this. There used to be some very active hams from up there in the 80s and 90s with some big stations.

Today I think only one or two stations exist in the Yukon in Whitehorse and they are all remotely operated.

So it’s fun for a few hams in Yukon to have the entirety of the USA chase them for the contest.

But …

 

Nunavut, that elusive one I haven't reached yet. Maybe I'll get it in the log before I go SK.

Canadian folklore says when the NWT land dispute occurred, the Inuit people flatly rejected territory proposals and loudly proclaimed they were having Nunavut, and so the name was adopted and used ever since...
