There have been several new Linux distros of note that have been released this week:

Freespire 2.0 (the freebee version of Linspire)distrowatch announcement

Linux Mint 3.0 "xfce" - Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu but contains alot of proprietary codecs and drivers. I've recently installed the "Gnome" version on a number of machines with very good results. This version uses the lightweight "XFCE" desktop and should work well on somewhat older machines...probably Pentium II's and earlier Pentium III's.distrowatch announcement

Sabayon 3.4e - Sabayon comes out of Italy and is based on the somewhat geeky "Gentoo" distro...but with the geekiness removed as I understand.
Have never tested it myself but I understand Sabayon has had some pretty good reviews.
