Thanks for this! Did you get a look at the back? Does it have an ethernet port / remote server? I saw that the new Yaesu SDR FTDX101D does not!

 

Nice, Lots of ports in the back , USB A, USB B, LAN (Either net), ANT OUT, What's the " Display " plug?

It's a few inches larger than my 590SG. The new TS-890S dimensions are: W15.6 X H5.6 X D13.4

The new weight is 37.5 lb vs 25 lb for the earlier TS-870S model.

Pricing and the release date will be in September only three months away.

Yes, look carefully at the video, they actually removed the glass for me and turned the radio around. Yes there is an Ethernet port "LAN". 73 Pascal VA2PV.

 

This should of been an SDR radio, this is old technology

No. It is about performance. Simply being an "SDR" doesn't imply any particular level of performance or features. There are a number of nominal SDR radios offered which have only token SDR implementation and are average to mediocre performers. The SDR in these cases is little more than a marketing angle.

We will have to see how the TS-890 stacks up. There is no reason to dismiss it at this point.

I agree - Consider the lovely new ICOM IC-7610 - which is a super nice rig - but fails to beat several older, more analog type radios on Sherwood's receiver test chart. Both the Elecraft K3S and Yaesu FTdx5000 are getting long in the tooth, but they STILL show good performance specs compared to SDRs. Not that Sherwood's list is the only criterion to consider - one should consider overall performance - saying a radio is an SDR does not, in itself, mean it performs better than another rig with a different architecture. There ARE still multiple ways to skin the cat.

Bottom line ... will it REALLY catch more DX than another rig? I wonder.

THE GOOD NEWS is the manufactures are not standing still and are all producing new products - and that seems a good thing for ham radio, in general.
