Been thinking about trying some digital radio stuff for a few years. I think there are some DSTAR repeaters in my area (Rochester, NY)?

Been looking at the Icom ID-31A PLUS and ID-51A PLUS.

Other than the addition of VHF, can someone explain the notable differences between them? Any features I might miss with the 31?

I've had a couple Yaesu and Baofeng radios. Currently love my Kenwood TH-F6A, but want to play with the digital modes a bit in the HT world.

Any other words of wisdom? Any features that are must-haves? Or things to stay away from?

    Thanks very much in advance

p.s. Anyone have a link to a good FAQ that explains the big picture advantages of digital for amateur radio?

The ID51A has some nice features in addition to covering 2 meters.

I like mine very much...built in GPS, connectivity with Android tablets...despite what you may hear the included battery has done well for me as far as battery life per charge.
