MS Office (one program of which IS Excel, ) is completely SEPARATE from the OS, whatever flavor of Windoze you use, including Win 10.
Be very careful what you buy off the I'net. Some may be "demo" versions that cease to function after 30 days w/o activation, or may already have been activated, and won't allow re-activation. Some are tied to a specific model of machine, and won't work on yours.:(

You can buy keys on ebay that will work. Or you can generate your own.

License info is in every file that you create. It is best to stay Legal. ;)

Older files may not work with newer version, Without modification. File types are different.

Newer file types don't open in older versions either.

    Ok, a clarification:

I understand how Windows and Office/Excel work, and used them for decades. I now use Libre Office and Mac software, so all I need Excel for is AutoEZ, to be run on the Windows10 virtual machine on my Mac.

I definitely want a legal install, and yes I know that eBay is treacherous.

Having said that, what I am looking for is a legal, functional, used older Office copy that I can get for much less than the current version at retail. Any practical suggestions on where to obtain that?

Any reason that you want it to be "Used" ?

Uh, because MS doesn’t sell new copies of old software.

If ALL you need is EXCEL, you can probably find it as a stand-alone program, rather than the entire MS Office Suite. Be careful of any version past '97; there can be a real problem with required activation.

You have to buy Office for $20.

There is no stand alone Excel.

If you are not willing to pay $20 for Office Pro, You do not need it. o_O
