    Allen B. Benson of Rochester, MN died Tuesday, May 16, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille; two sons, Glenn (Laurie, son Tom) and Eric (Eileen); two daughters, Luann and Norma (Ian) McNicol; and one grandson, Alfie McNicol.

    Born in Chicago in 1930 to Alf and Agnes Benson, they later moved to a farm near Litchville ND, where Allen was raised through high school. While in the National Guard, Allen was activated during the Korean war, and served as an Air Force radio operator at Grenier Air Force Base in Manchester, NH, where he met his wife Lucille. In 1952, he was transferred to Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, GA, and under the GI bill, he earned a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Upon graduating, he started his career at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1964, he transferred to IBM in Rochester, where he retired in 1993.

    Each summer, Allen enjoyed returning to North Dakota to help during harvest on his father’s farm. He also enjoyed maintaining vegetable gardens on his own land. He took pleasure in wood and electrical work. Allen was an avid HAM radio operator communicating with fellow operators throughout the country. At IBM, he had great success inventing innovative computer components.
    There will be no visitation hours as a private funeral service is planned.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army or a charity of choice.
