In this video I combine my love of woodworking with my love of ham radio and create an ammo can case for the Xiegu G90 using some scraps I had laying around the house. The lumber used is leopard wood left over from another project. I have found that the rig works wonderfully in the ammo can case. The audio is greatly improved and ventilation has not been issue with the fan and vent I added to the case. I love having the radio for Backyard Portable operations in a very short period of time, and the case is perfect for travel.
Thank you for sharing this! I do not love working with wood (not that I don't appreciate fine woodworking) however I do love working with steel. I may just do something similar using steel.
I was just telling my wife last night how I wish I had a metal shop too. I did a little metal work at a friends shop years ago, but it is a different medium that I just don’t have a full grasp of. Metal would be pretty rockin for this build for sure.
The way you feel about steel is exactly how I feel about wood working. I enjoy fine woodwork, but anything I try and do with wood, let's say, is better off being a doorstop than the use I originally planned to use it for.
OK, here's a few more lines. Just abit offbeat due to lack of caffeine: ..."5 Xiegu guys walk into a bar..." Four order wine spritzers. One orders a single-malt scotch (straight up of course!) The four "spritzer's" all start crowing about their Xiegus but the fifth says... Ok kiddos, add on at will Mac/WT4BT
Oh, yeah, I like your build. I prefer soft cases though as they don't have sharp(ish) corners that eat holes in backpacks or luggage. Just my preference though. Ammo cans and the like are fine for "toss it in the car and go" though. Good protection from bashing about. And fine woodworking is a plus! Mac/WT4BT
Remembers me to the old BOSCH FuG 8b without a carrying handle. Dont miss that thing. Weight of the full radio with case and control unit about 6,8 kg. https://www.bw-funk.de/fufg8b.htm
