Municipal tax on masts and pylons

Belgium's national amateur radio society UBA reports the number of cities and municipalities that levy a tax on masts and pylons has risen sharply in recent months

A translation of their post reads:

Currently, one in four Flemish municipalities already levies such a tax. Although the municipalities involved almost never intend to impose this tax on radio amateurs and other citizens or associations that have a mast for recreational purposes, in many cases no exemption is provided for.

There is no reason to panic at the moment, but we still have to follow this issue closely and, where necessary, urge the municipalities to exempt masts with a purely recreational function.

The UBA board of directors has decided to hold (at least) an information meeting per province. At these meetings we do not only provide a picture of the situation, but also advice on how to best tackle this problem.

The following meetings are already planned:
    • Limburg: Friday 21 February at 8 pm in Genk (room MLB, Steenbeukstraat 1, 3600 Genk). All UBA members are welcome. Whoever wants to attend this meeting is asked to register.
    • East Flanders: Friday 28 February in Sint-Laureins (makers' lab De Shack Leemweg 5, 9980 Sint-Laureins). Due to limited space, this meeting is reserved for the CMs of the province of East Flanders or their substitutes.
    • Flemish Brabant: Friday 6 March at 8 pm in Diest (room DST, Citadel zn, 3290 Diest).

    All UBA members are welcome.

A meeting is also planned in the provinces of West Flanders and Antwerp in the near future, details will follow.

If necessary, additional meetings can be arranged later.

My complete response to this thread can not be made in this forum. Will just say the UK got it right and let it go at that.

On the positive side, if masts are seen as income generators, then the authorities in countries like the UK, where planning is tough in residential areas, might start to allow more of them!
