Michael Bien, 72, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Friday, June 25, 2021, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mike leaves his wife of almost 48 years, Carolyn (Wilburn) Bien; his three daughters, Jennifer Bien-Esrock (Charles), Amy Sebelius (Joshua), and Kelly Phelps (Ryan); his six grandchildren, Max Bien, Neil Phelps, Maya Phelps, Rebecca Esrock, Joseph Esrock and Jonathan Esrock; and many other family and friends. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, the son of Kenneth and Florence (Gorman) Bien, Mike was a lifelong resident of St. Louis, MO up until October 2020, when he and his wife followed daughters and moved to Draper, UT for a few months and then to Las Vegas, NV for a few more months, only to be in the process of moving back to St. Louis, MO when his untimely death occurred. Mike lived for adventure and loved many different hobbies, especially in his retirement years. During his life, he was a small aircraft pilot, a ham radio operator, a policeman, a shop teacher, a scuba diver instructor, a hot-air balloon pilot, an Air National Guard member, a Boeing Safety Engineer, and most importantly, the best husband, father and ‘Papa’. Mike loved hot-air ballooning, bowling, woodworking, building a model train display, and volunteering at the Wabash Frisco & Pacific Railway, the National Weather Service and the Red Cross. Services: A Celebration of Life was held at Westwood Country Club in St. Louis on Thursday, July 15 from 4-6 p.m. A private service for family will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made in memory of Mike to the American Heart Association or the Wabash Frisco and Pacific Railroad Association (WFP RR. c/o Mike Lorance-Treasurer, 17238 Hilltop Ridge Drive, Eureka, MO 63025-1039).
