When you go to Function Row 10 in the FT-818's menu, does the little ">" icon show next to KEYER above Button C?

    I have made a video
does this help explain my issue?

yes, my other keyer works, and just plugging a paddle in and using the internal keyer works.

Have you explored the 490's internal jumper?

No not yet, but it's brand new, should be set for modern rigs, according to the manual? but as a final check
    I will explore that option.

    I'd try two things:

    First confirm 'OUTPUT TUNE' works:

That should key your rig and send a steady carrier like a straight key continuously closed.

Also confirm the OUTPUT is actually turned 'ON' and not OFF:

I don't know about this particular keyer, but the MFJ 495 I have has a jumper you can set for use in grid block keying. If that jumper is set, it will not key a "modern" transceiver.

But likely is what WIK pointed out: turn the output on. For some (bizarre) reason the default out of the box is OFF....and you'd think they'd mention that first thing in the manual. Nope. I was scratching my head for quite a while when I got mine before I figured that out.

Output tune puts the keyer tone, but does not key the rig.
output is on - tried off and on - keyer send command in cw.

Eventually I found this, but that's not the issue.
