This evening, Monday, September 29th, 2025, Dan Gitro (K2DMG) will host a Memorial Net using Special Event Callsign N2G, marking the one-year anniversary of the emergency net that followed the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. This ad-hoc net began as a simple call to check if anyone needed assistance after the hurricane dumped over 30 inches of rain in the mountains of Western North Carolina—an area unaccustomed to storms of such magnitude. Within moments, it became clear that this was no ordinary net. It quickly evolved into a critical communications hub, facilitating emergency medical assistance, rescue coordination with helicopters, rescue crews, and the reporting of casualties and stranded individuals—at a time when all other forms of communication had failed. Tonight’s net will reflect on those events, featuring firsthand accounts from Dan and fellow amateur radio operators who took part. They will share how ham radio played a vital role in saving lives and maintaining communication in the face of complete infrastructure collapse. I listened in on the broadcast and was surprised that Dan was told to shut down the net and destroy all logs. His reply was "Make me." Many agencies in the state were supportive. He didn't identify who wanted it shut down. Way to go Dan. I would love to see a documentary about your experience.
