    OBITUARY ANNOUNCEMENT

    Louis Elwood Conary, a long-time past resident of Johnston County died Tuesday, July 17th following a lengthy battle with cancer. Lou was recently hospitalized in Newport News, Virginia. At his death, he was surrounded by his family and Pastor.
    Lou was born Feb 7, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. He served early in the Vietnam Conflict in the U.S. Army's 503rd Pathfinders. During the 1980s and 1990s he was employed by AM & PM Amusements, of Clayton.
    Lou was for a great many years of his life an Amateur Radio Operator, under the call sign WD4EIQ. He was well known by members of both the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society (RARS), and the Johnston Amateur Radio Society (JARS). He served as a volunteer communications operator during disasters with the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, and with U.S. Navy-Marine Corps MARS, using the Navy call sign NNN0SZC.
    Lou moved to Virginia in 1997, and is survived there locally by his two sons, Elwood and Bill, and their families.
    A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 28th, at 3:00 p.m., at Waverly Baptist Church in Waverly, VA.
