While negotiating a non-radio deal the other day, I noticed this baby sitting on a shelf in the guy's garage. He said he had no idea what it was, it came with the house, and threw it into the package deal. It was still in it's original box, and came with two nice AK Variable Capacitors. Now they are sitting on my desk! I just tested the continuity of the taps and coils... and all of the wires are intact. The only thing that appears to be not prefect about them is a good layer of old grime. The AK Variocoupler was used in 1920's style breadboard radios, and when combined with the variable capacitor makes a GREAT front-end for a tube type TRF Radio, or a really good crystal set. If you notice, the coil is tapped with both course and fine taps, and coupling is variable from full to zero.... all I'lI need to do is add a detector, an antenna, and some sort of audio output, and it should tune MF to the middle of the shortwaves! The big question now is: what do I want to build? Whatever it is.... it's GOT to be COOL!
