A base loaded vertical is always shown with the loading coil in line with the element. Can it be at 90 degrees?

I am building a base loaded antenna that has a remote switched loading coil. It will be in the middle of the roof of my mobile home. The roof is aluminium and it will be used as the GP.

Mechanically it will be simpler to have the coil at 90 degrees and a few inches above the roof.

    Thoughts?

    No problem in doing that.

How many taps will be switched?

If the coil does not have a significant electrical length, it will not radiate so you can freely change its orientation. This is exactly what happens when an antenna tuner is used as the various L and C values are selected.

    Many thanks for your replies.

It will start as a 1/4 wave on 10m. Then add a loading coil for 20m. Then switched taps for 20 to 10m.

Another post will show how it will all be mounted.

My coil looks like 90 Degrees but it identifies as straight.
