Kumamoto Earthquake M7.1 — 28 Jul 2026: Request to Keep Japanese Emergency Frequencies Clear At approximately 4:27 p.m. Japan Standard Time on July 28, 2026, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kumamoto area of Kyushu, Japan, with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale. In view of the possibility that amateur radio may be used for emergency communication and information gathering, Japanese radio amateurs have been asked to keep the emergency communication frequencies clear. The following frequencies are designated for emergency communication use in Japan: 3.535 MHz 7.050 MHz 14.300 MHz 18.160 MHz 21.360 MHz 28.200 MHz We respectfully ask radio amateurs outside Japan, particularly stations in nearby countries and other parts of IARU Region 3, to avoid unnecessary transmissions on or near these frequencies for the next several days following the earthquake. Some of these frequencies are specific to the Japanese amateur radio band plan rather than common Region 3 Centres of Activity. However, signals from neighboring countries can be received strongly in Japan, so your voluntary cooperation in preventing interference would be greatly appreciated. Please listen carefully before transmitting. If emergency traffic is heard, please keep the frequency clear and avoid causing interference. I am a staff member of JA1RL, the JARL Central Station.
