    Very sad for all involved.

Short towers with TV antennas were common in the midwest and south until the last decade, and few of these had fencing. IOW the issue of potential negligence was not common and few towns had regulations for such. Now they all do, for all practical purposes.

It seems that it is now the rarity of such installations that makes them a magnet for mischief, in this case with tragic results:-(

The "tower" isn't anywhere near the chimney! What prompted him to climb to the other side of the roof and scale the chimney and then dive down? Maybe some unresolved Santa Claus fetish.

Because Santa Claus can come down a chimney anyone can.

The article called it a "radio tower". Don't know what type of log-periodic is atop the tower.

There is probably more than one Jim in Cleveland, but this one is a ham.

I went back and re-read the article again. There is no mention of Radio of any kind.... In fact, I didn't even see a reference to 'tower.' Perhaps they edited the story after the fact and removed all references to radio and tower?

I believe, with out any direct evidence or any eye witnesses, the method used to reach the roof and chimney is pure speculation....

Here is a better photo of the antenna, and it sure does look like a TV antenna, not any amateur radio antenna.

I don't know where I saw a news story referring to it as a radio tower.

Searching again, I cannot find any reference to radio tower.

    Sorry!

I occasionally run across stories of people stuck in chimneys. One from a few years ago involved an old building being razed, and inside the chimney was a skeleton. Turned out it may have been a burglar, and the guy had been missing for years.

Stories like this crop up from time to time:

OK, so I know this has nothing to do with ham radio (as others have pointed out!) so I will stop posting on this.
