My thoughts exactly. Do we really need MORE VHF/UHF radios?

I kick myself for not buying a D710GA when they were available.

My first rig was a D700a, still works awesome 20 years later, from sitting in the shack to being out in the truck and back.

This, yeah......I'll pass. If anyone has a decently priced gently used 710GA for sale, im all ears

 

$300 is the most I have ever paid for a phone, and that was 2 years ago for a used iPhone 14 with a 1 year warranty. I always buy used 2-3 year old iPhones, and use them until they are not updateable anymore. I do the same thing with cars, except I only buy Toyota, and run them trouble free for 300K+ miles. I may be cheap, but I am not a sheep

 

The control head is absolutely HUGE! I thought it was about 2/3 the size it is. Here it is compared to my IC-7100.

 

Well, as "they" say, size is relative.

I've been a bit concerned about the size of the display on the TM-D750 and your comparison makes me even more concerned. If the size of the display is smaller than the IC-7100 display, which is sitting in front of me for reference, then I think that's a problem. As your photo shows, the actual portion of the display that shows data is very small. The LCD is bigger, but much of the LCD is being used to show the labels of the "soft" buttons. The end result is a small display.

Icom has promised APRS functionality in a future firmware update for the ID-5200. If its display is larger than the Kenwood's, I think that will sway my decision since I really don't need 222 MHz in a mobile radio.

 

Kenwood, like Mike Brady, is pumping a dry well.

 

Mine showed up today. So far, just tabletop playing with it, I am not that impressed. Lack of a touchscreen is a BIG miss in my opinion.

However here's some positives:
- The APRS and DStar options seemed EXTENSIVE. Just a ton of options.
- Menus fairly easy to navigate BUT can go deep quickly.
- All the mounting options included!
- A bunch of little accessories in the box

Negatives:
- Programming software seems like a headache so far as you can't copy/paste into the slots. It did come pre-programmed with all the DStar repeaters worldwide.

- The even bigger miss so far seems like I can't program in GPS coordinates for Analog repeaters near me. The biggest feature I use on a 5100 while traveling (which I do often) is the near repeater scanning set to 'all' for Digital and Analog. If I can't figure that out or it's just not built in, that will be a HUGE miss for me personally as that is a MUST feature for me since I travel a lot and love scanning all the near repeaters with my 5100.

- Seems you can only scan either the memory list or the digital repeater list one at a time unless you also program the DStar repeaters into the regular menu side.

- More to come, I have a full unboxing + initial impressions video coming shortly. I am going to mount it in the truck and play with it for a week before making any final conclusions.

 

A Nice radio and all, seems a bit costly. I would have purchased one if they were not playing this silly game of pre-order and wait. Now that HRO has them the game has chaged to shipping preorders only. Not a good way to do business imho. But this ham waits for no radio so i have moved along to other better radios.
