Is it normal for the S-Meter on Kenwood rigs to read ridiculously generous on FM?

On my Yaesu & Icom, when comparing to the Kenwood, I'm seeing S6 >S7, but when I check the same signal on my Kenwood's I'm seeing S9+60DB - pegging over.

The Kenwood rigs I'm referring to are a TS-480HX and TS-590SG.

S-Meter readings on SSB are OK.

Are all Kenwood rigs like this while in FM mode?

I have the TS480HX mobile, and TS590S in the shack.

I've never noticed it, but I Love both rigs so much, that it would not bother me.

Unless you're "fox hunting" an S-meter on FM usually doesn't mean anything. I never look at one.

Commercial/industrial LMR FM rigs don't have S-meters at all. Either you hear the station or you don't.:)

For "fox hunting" where an S-meter would be very useful, when you're hunting the hidden transmitter you don't need to transmit, only such a case it pays to use an AM (or SSB) receiver, not an FM one, where signal strength indicators are more accurate and have a lot more dynamic range.
