    Kálmán Imre Oravecz, PhD (known as “Apu” to his family and “Dr. O” to his students), passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, at the age of 88. Kálmán was born in Nógrádsipek, Hungary in 1932; he left Hungary during the 1956 Revolution one semester shy of completing his Masters degree in Mining Engineering. He was welcomed into the United Kingdom, along with 20,000 other Hungarian refugees, and lived there for several years where he redid his Masters degree at the University of Durham, Kings College, in Newcastle, England and began his career. He moved to South Africa where he conducted research to improve mine safety at the Chamber of Mines and completed a PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand. While living there he met and married his wife Barbara and had three children: István, Ildikó, and Kálmán. The Oravecz family moved to the United States in 1977 where he began a teaching career in the Mining and Mineral Engineering Department at New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

    He taught courses and established a research laboratory in his area of expertise, Rock Mechanics, and continued his research in the field. He advised students on their PhD studies, many of whom kept in touch with “Dr. O” throughout their lives and careers. He was incredibly proud of the successes and accomplishments of all his students. During many summers he volunteer taught high-school-aged Native American students as part of the Native American Mining Engineering Students (NAMES) program. His professional association memberships and contributions to the profession of mining engineering are numerous, and he would have downplayed them due to his humble and modest nature. He was very active in the local community: Kalman was a long-time member of the parish of San Miguel and he and Barbara volunteered their time to the church. He was an avid radio ham (ZS6KP ? and AJ5B) and member of the Socorro Amateur Radio Association; he was recognized by the Association for his many years of outstanding volunteer service as their “Chief Examiner.” He and Barbara loved playing tennis together and spent decades as members of the Socorro Tennis Association. He loved playing Hungarian folk music on his alto clarinet (tárogató), enjoyed the sport of gliding that he had first taken up in Hungary, and had numerous other interests and hobbies. Kálmán was known for his warmth and friendliness, his generous spirit, his sense of humor, and his willingness to go the extra mile for his students. Kálmán was preceded in death by his parents and two of his three siblings.

    He is survived by his wife of 55-years Barbara, his son Istvàn and daughter-in-law Sue, his daughter Ildikó and son-in-law Kevin Bryant, his younger brother Miklós, and his many nieces, nephews, and other relatives in Hungary. His bright and loving presence will be sorely missed. A memorial mass will be held Friday, August 27, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Parish of San Miguel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Socorro Amateur Radio Association: https://greatnonprofits.org/org/socorro-amateur-radio-association.

    His care has been entrusted to Daniels Family Funeral Services, 309 Garfield St Socorro, NM 87801

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    88 éves korában, békében, szerető családjával körülvéve elhunyt Oravecz Kálmán Imre, Phd (gyermekeinek „Apu”, diákjainak pedig “Dr. O.”) Kálmán 1932-ben született a magyarországi Nógrádsipeken. Az 1956-os forradalom idején, egy félévvel a bányamérnöki diplomája megszerzése előtt hagyta el Magyarországot. 20 000 magyar menekülttel együtt az Egyesült Királyság fogadta be. Több évig élt ott, közben a durhami egyetemen a Newcastle-i King’s College-ban ismét megszerezte a mesterdiplomát. Itt kezdte el karrierjét is, majd a dél-afrikai köztársaságba költözött, ahol olyan kutatásokat vezetett, amelyek a bányák biztonságosságát voltak hivatottak javítani. Emellett a Witwatersrand egyetemen megszerezte Phd képesítését is. Itt ismerte meg későbbi feleségét, Barbarát, és három gyermekük született: István, Ildikó és Kálmán.
    Az Oravecz család 1977-ben költözött az USA-ba, ahol Kálmán az Új Mexikói Egyetem Socorro-i intézményének Bányászati és Ásványmérnöki karán kezdte el tanári karrierjét. Kurzusokat vezetett, és a szakterületével, a kőzetmechanikával foglalkozó kutatólaboratóriumot hozott létre, miközben tovább folytatta a kutatói munkát. Számos diákjának volt a PhD megszerzésében a konzulense, akik közül sokan a karrierjük és életük későbbi szakaszában is tartották a kapcsolatot “Dr.O”-val. Rendkívül büszke volt hallgatóinak sikereire, és mindarra amit elértek. Több nyarat is azzal töltött, hogy az ún. NAMES (North American Mining Engineering Students – Észak-amerikai bányamérnök hallgatók programja) programban önkénteskedett, és amerikai indián gyökerekkel rendelkező középiskolásokat tanított. Rendkívül nagy számú szakmai társulás tagja volt, és számos hozzájárulása volt a bányamérnöki tudományág különböző területeihez, ezeket viszont nem szívesen hangoztatta – szerény és alázatos ember lévén.
    Aktív részt vállalt az őt körülvelő közösség életében: Kálmán régóta tagja volt a San Miguel templom közösségének, ahol ő és Barbara rendszeresen önkénteskedtek. Lelkes amatőr rádiós volt (ZS6KP és AJ5B), és a soccoro-i amatőr rádiósok egyesületének is tagja volt. Sokéves hűséges önkéntes szolgálatát az egyesület a „Fő vizsgáztató” titulussal ismerte el.
    Barbarával szerettek teniszezni, és évtizedekig a Socorro-i teniszközösség lelkes tagjai voltak. Nagyon szeretett magyar népzenét játszani a tárogatóján, és szeretett siklóernyőzni, amit még Magyarországon kedvelt meg. Kálmánnak számos más hobbija is volt, és mindenki barátságos, kedves, nagylelkű, vicces embernek ismerte, aki hallgatóiért mindent megtett.
    Kálmánnak meghaltak a szülei, és 2 testvére is. Gyászolják felesége, Barbara, akivel 55 évig voltak házasok, fia, István és menye Sue, lánya Ildikó és veje Kevin Bryant, öccse, Miklós, valamint számos unokaöccse és unokahúga, és a többi magyarországi rokon. Mindannyiuknak hiányozni fog kedves, szeretetteljes személye.
    A San Miguel templomban szolgáltatunk érte misét augusztus 27-én, 10 órai kezdettel. Virágok helyett, kérjük, hogy a Socorro-i amatőr rádiósok egyesületét támogassák, akik velünk gyászolnak.
