(K5NA - Richard King - Manor - USA (dxnews.com)) "Information from Bernie, W3UR Daily DX: K5NA, Richard L. King, died yesterday in a "terrible accident" as he was helping someone take down a 40 meter Telrex Yagi and was electrocuted. Richard jumped in at the last minute to try and keep the antenna from getting "snagged on a guy wire". The antenna hit a nearby powerline. Two local neighborhood nurses arrived within a few minutes and began CPR continuing until EMS arrived. Richard died on the way to the hospital or shortly thereafter. Richard was a longtime DXer and Contester and one of the best at both! K5NA had 340/374 (current/total) confirmed in the ARRL DXCC Mixed Standings. He had 3167 confirmed in the ARRL DXCC Challenge of which 321 were on 160 meters." Sad day, but a reminder that some things are best left to professionals or trained workers. I'll add my sincere condolences to Susan.
Wow - sad and tragic news indeed SO sorry to hear this. I have him in my log many times on 160m CW - he was my first-ever Texas QSO on that band. May he rest in peace. I've updated his QRZ page to SK Dave W7UUU
Truly awful. So sad. I work in high voltage substations. I know first hand how easy it is to make mistakes even when surrounded by rigid procedures and grounding practices. Please, people, stay safe. My condolences to the family.
As an operator here in the Central Texas area, I quickly learned from my mentor, K5EJL, this morning that Richard King had passed away yesterday in this terrible accident. He and his wife had always had their propety open for the K5LBJ Club to come tour, which we did a number of years ago), and we were recently in the planning phase of going back to visit. From what I've heard, Mr. King was a great man and he will be dearly missed not just here in Central Texas but all around the world.
Would have been nice to leave his page as it was for awhile with just an SK notation. Lots of interesting stuff on that page in the past that some might still want to look at given his DX and Contest reputation.
Agreed. It would be easy enough to restore the content. It would disappear on its own once the callsign gets reissued. If someone submits an obituary to the FCC the license will be cancelled immediately and be available for reissue in 2 years.
Richard was very welcoming to me in the Central Texas DX & Contest Club and invited me out a couple of times to operate during multi op events at his and Susan's station. I last spent quite a bit of time catching up with him last year at Belton. He accomplished so much in this hobby and his death is tragic. He will always be considered one of my Elmer's in the hobby and I will greatly miss him.
That's just not true. I ONLY changed the SK notice. We NEVER delete SK bio pages. (Excepting of course when a call sign is reassigned to a new user who takes over the page) His web page was blanked by him (or whomever managed his page) on July 16, 2015 Dave W7UUU
Sorry--I know that when I looked at it in the past, likely a long time ago, there was good info there. My apologies
