K4M - Battle of Kings Mountain Chasing Cornwallis Challenge Amateur Radio Special Event #5 of 6 HUZZA!!! To every Participant and Volunteer who shared the airwaves with us for July's K4A - America250 Signers Challenge: Thank You! Your energy, your contacts, and your commitment: "Keeping the Stories Alive" ...made that Commemorative event unforgettable. The K4A - Signers Challenge will return in 2027. We are grateful you are part of our shared Call to Action to honor the Men and Women Who Won America: "To be their witness...because without a witness, they just disappear." The 2026 Chasing Cornwallis Challenge continues. Each October we commemorate one of the most pivotal battles of America’s War for Independence - the Battle of Kings Mountain - a remarkable Turning Point in the fight for Liberty. On 7 October 1780, Frontiersmen called "Overmountain Men" joined with Patriot militia to accomplish what many thought impossible: they destroyed a Loyalist fighting force led by British Major Patrick Ferguson - a revered Commander of the most feared and well-provisioned army in the world...but one thing was lacking, the fire in their belly that only Liberty could ignite. Come learn with us the stories which deserve to be understood by current and future generations. Sounds great. We as a team will be working from north Idaho on both the k4m and k4y events. What great special events you all have planned and operated. US military history was and did happen and that cannot be denied. Some actions were good and some were bad but they all had an impact on where we came from and how are country developed. Congratulations to Marc and all the helpers. Do not under estimate they and all past and future Hams have lent to our country and way of life. 73 Joe W1YV
Just this morning I was looking at a schedule I'd saved earlier this year for these events and here it is on QRZ too! Definitely looking forward to this!
Hello again! I am Mike and I will be supporting the K4M activation from Aurora, Colorado. I will be using my FTDX10 running 100W to my EFHW. I look forward to meeting you again and getting you in the logbook for your Chasing Cornwallis Challenge certificate. Please be sure to check out the HISTORY.RADIO website for all the station activations, bands, frequencies, and modes. See you on the bands soon!
Hello, I am Jerry, WK4K, and I am pleased to be back with the Chasing Cornwallis Challenge team for this K4M event. As with K4A, I will be operating on 20 and 40 meters using an all-American Drake station on sideband, and a bicentennial (1976) Yaesu station on sideband and AM. As the descendant of a veteran in the southern campaign who served under General Greene, I look forward to sharing an enjoyment of our national (and local) history with you all. The battle of Kings Mountain has particular significance not only for its impact on a victory for American independence, but also because some notable early settlers, founders, and leaders of my home state and community were present there. Huzza from Tennessee!
Good morning everyone! I am Jim, KQ4LBM, and will be operating K4M from north of Nashville TN. I expect to be operating mostly on 20 meters, but will shift to 40, and others as conditions may dictate. I operate SSB only so plan to listen for the sound of my voice! Looking forward to hearing you on the air as we Chase Cornwallis and Ferguson over the mountain!
Hello! This is Brooke, KB1MKL. I will back again for this event and will be operating SSB from Connecticut on whatever bands I can (2-80). I will be using an ICOM 7300 with a 30ft. vertical, a Yaesu 991-A with a Mosley Jr. pointed West-ish, and so as not to wake anyone, a Yaesu 891 from the car with an ATAS antenna if necessary! I'll probably try some 2m simplex from a mountain top or my QTH (I'm on a bit of a hill). Lots of options for lots of contacts! Hope to see you on the bands!
This is Don in Western, NY. I will be operating K4M from my QTH, primarily on 20 meters during the day & 40 meters in the evening (both SSB) as conditions permit. All of the activations will be spotted on HISTORY.RADIO, so you'll know when we are active. Enjoy the chase and learn a little history with us. I look forward to hearing you all soon!
Jeremy here, I will be operating K4M from Northeast Arkansas with 100w through a 135ft end-fed inverted V about 50ft high or a W4BD 4020 Fan Vertical. I'll likely find a spot on 20 during the day unless the higher bands present an opening, but I'm going to try to focus on the lower 40 and 80m bands at night if the noise floor cooperates. I may even throw up a dedicated NVIS antenna, I know I've had difficulty getting stations before when everyone is on 20m and I'm too close! I'll be mostly SSB, but may throw some CW or AM in if I feel froggy. If there's any local interest, I can do 2m SSB as well, but I'm limited on antennas there.
Hi y´all my name is Gary Provot and I am pleased to be net control support for the Battle of Kings Mountain, special event, to commemorate the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at the end of the Revolutionary War. You will be able to find me on 80m, 40m, 20m, and 15 m ssb. I will also try to work 2m fm if anyone needs vhf operators to be available. I am running the Yeasu 991-A barefoot through a 135ft, homebrew, center fed dipole, approximately 30ft high, strung up between a couple trees, bringing my elevation up to about 1030ft above sea level. My 2m antenna is the Comet gp6. I cant wait to work all that will be hunting! Huzzah! Kr4ddw
Thanks to fellow Hams having interest in this Special Event to be here reading this message - just as the all-Volunteer Patriot Militia were making ready to engage the world's most feared and well provisioned fighting force - the British Army - Team K4M are making final plans to honor their sacrifice and VICTORY which, without British defeat at Kings Mountain, we would be sipping British tea and paying British taxes likely unto this day - and the larger point - likely so would the entire world. The British Empire had already defeated the only other two foes that could oppose King George III's well known globalist ambitions, France and Spain - and the British Southern Campaign was working to perfection - until the British faltered at Kings Mountain - the importance of The Battle of Kings Mountain cannot be over-stated. Howard from Central Florida checking in. Mainly will be 20m SSB, we'll see and other bands possibly. I'm looking forward to catching you all on the air. K4A was all kinds of cool and expect K4M to be no different. For those that remember me from K4A, I like to talk. For this event, I'll be working the talking points a bit differently.... but still yappinng away : ) My club's 61st hamfest is this weekend and I'm heavily involved with that, however I'll try to activate as much as I can for K4M.
Hi Frank, Thank you for reaching out and your interest in history.radio! Our core mission for this event is to celebrate the historical, conversational nature of Amateur Radio by encouraging content-driven contacts. We intentionally prioritize modes like SSB and CW along with the option for Volunteer-selected digimodes like RTTY, PSK31, and Olivia because they give operators the room to exchange details beyond callsign and a basic signal report. Because I believe the APRS protocol hard-caps text payloads to just 67 characters per packet, that restriction isn't well-suited for the conversational exchanges to include e.g. QSL Card and Certificate conversation. However, since our team is entirely Volunteer-driven, we try to be as accommodating as possible. Looks like you may have the ideal candidate to assist you with your goal since Howard KR4EIB has stepped forward above and is a K4M Volunteer. Our event logger has an "Other" option specifically for unique setups like this for on-demand, one-offs. Confession - I have never heard of APRS messaging but have high regard for its capability with admiration of the work Bob Bruinga WB4APR/SK, who among many projects, worked tirelessly on the "Golden Packet" project to provide backcountry comms along the entire length of the ~2,100 mile Appalachian Trail - my hunch is you remember Bob. If you do manage to link up with Howard or another Volunteer via APRS text, make sure they log the contact with the correct mode which from what I am reading would be PKT for confirmation within the QRZ Logbook. 73, Marc - W4OVT
