John was first licensed in 1955. He lived in Oklahoma for awhile and held W5OYG. He moved back to Kansas in 1973 and retrieved K0EQY.

John owned and operated the Ben Franklin variety store in downtown Hillsboro, KS. He started selling ham radio equipment in a back room at the store. He then started the BF Electronics store in downtown Hillsboro, selling ham radio equipment, consumer electronics, and land mobile radio. During this period (end of the 70s t to early 80s), BF Electronics advertised monthly in QST magazine, and sold equipment to hams all over the world by mail order.

John was one of my elmers, along K0PFU, Dave.
