The brother of a Palm City man found dead with his wife last week from complications of hepatitis A said the family is struggling to determine how two healthy people got the virus.

“It’s all very strange to us,” Ned Kirsch, 53, said Friday. “It makes no sense to us.”

Jeffrey Kirsch, and his wife, Nancy, both 62, were found dead March 28 in their Palm City home.

Ned Kirsch said his brother told him he thought he had the flu, something Jeffrey Kirsch told others in the days before his passing.

Ned Kirsch said the couple met at Michigan State University more than 30 years ago, and were devoted to each other. Jeffrey Kirsch attended law school in Vermont, and they moved to Stuart because Nancy Kirsch’s parents were living here.

“My brother was just a great, all-around guy,” Ned Kirsch said. “She (Nancy Kirsch) was just super nice, heart of gold.”

Ned Kirsch, of Burlington, Vermont, said they had no children. He added Nancy Kirsch was a big animal lover.

“She was one of those people who would do anything for any animal,” Ned Kirsch said. “She had a huge heart.”

He said his brother, an attorney whose office was in Stuart, was passionate about his interests, which included the National Rifle Association, guitars, music and scotch. He also was involved with amateur, or ham, radio.

“What we always said about my brother was, anything worth doing was worth overdoing,” Ned Kirsch said.

There have been 13 confirmed cases of hepatitis A in Martin County since the beginning of the year, according to health officials.

A Friday request for hepatitis A statistics from the state health department over the past five years in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties was not fulfilled.

The medical examiner’s office on Thursday reported the couple’s cause of death was “complications of hepatitis (hepatitis A).” The manner of death was listed as natural.

Ned Kirsch learned about the findings Thursday.

Hepatitis A is a “highly contagious liver infection” caused by the hepatitis A virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Rarely does it cause death. Most who get hepatitis A feel sick for weeks, but usually recover with no lasting liver damage.

Ned Kirsch said the couple were vegetarian and were very neat, healthy people. Nancy Kirsch didn’t drink.

“We’re all heartbroken,” Ned Kirsch said.

Ned Kirsch said he feels they haven’t gotten definitive answers.

“I think there’s some other tests that are being run that we won’t know about for a couple of weeks,” he said.

Noting the couple died within hours of each other, Ned Kirsch said things don’t make sense.

“It doesn’t feel like we have a lot of closure; we’re all heartbroken, but it doesn’t feel like we really know,” he said. “Maybe we never will, which makes it even harder.”
