New Ham. Planned first antenna J Pole to mount upon mast at tree line edge of property < 5 feet from trees ( Palm and Pine). Wife concerned I'll turn tree into torch. I dispute this but hey... Will be using 5 watt HT until upgrade. Should I install fire suppression system, relocate, take up golf instead or just nod and smile?

    Curious

Not even remotely a chance of fire from a 5-watt radio to a J-Pole. Tell her she can rest assured :)

But for radio purposes, a simple 1/4-wave ground plane would work much better than a J-Pole. Not sure why J-Poles are so popular - they're not a very good antenna compared to a ground plane.

Lightning could hit it and start a fire.

As I understand it, every thing IS burning.
At least, if it is oxidizing, it is burning, at a very slow rate...

But with or without an antenna, a tree can be struck by lightning, more so if the antenna is grounded, but that too is determined by nearby structures with better or worse conductivity.

As far as golf goes, watch caddy shack, you don't waant to lose faith in God...

Lightning could hit ANYTHING and start a fire.... the tree, the house, the power pole....

Maybe best to live underground in a bunker and never come out, just to be safe nothing bad can happen ;)

The question was: will a 5-watt radio into a J-Pole in-and-of-itself start a fire. The answer is NO. Absolutely NO.

Not through normal means... you're safe.

And it's on the internet, so it must be true.

Not being able to mount the antenna that would just burn me up.
