WA7FW - Federal Way Amateur Radio Club writes "International Space Station participates in Field Day 2001

While doing 20 meter phone this year we were also monitoring the ISS frequency to send packets for fun via APRS. We were very surprised when instead of packet data we instead heard CQ 1B - Battery on the downlink frequency. Yes that's right Susan Helms on the ISS was participating in Field Day. Not being one to let a contact get away we imediatly transmitted this is WA7FW and sent our exchange which was confirmed by Susan on the ISS. Talk about a fantastic experience. Thank you Susan and ARISS for providing such a memorable contact. Talk about neat. As she traveled out of range we heard her identify as NA1SS, who she was and to make comments about her battery powered / solar powered status while again calling CQ.

Who else was able to work the ISS? If you worked it what was your experience?"
