I'm joined by Bill W9KKN, Dan N6MJ, Randy K5ZD, Chris KL9A, and special guest Tim Duffy, K3LR—a leading figure in multi-multi contesting and the builder behind one of the most recognized stations in the United States. Tim joins the Contest Crew to break down what it takes to run a top-tier multi team—year after year. Tim Duffy K3LR walks us through his 70-sweep proof-of-performance process, operator scouting and selection, and the now-legendary K3LR playbook. With over three decades of contesting experience, he offers a detailed look at the planning, systems, and leadership that keep the station sharp and the team focused. At K3LR, every detail is intentional—but that doesn’t mean it’s all seriousness. This episode captures what makes multi-multi so compelling: not just the scale, but the camaraderie. There’s plenty of laughter, long-running inside jokes, and the kind of chemistry that only builds after years of doing something hard together—and loving it. The crew swaps war stories, revisits early contesting memories, and shares the human side of high-performance radio. As Randy K5ZD says, it’s the Formula One of contesting. For Tim and his crew, it’s also home. Join the conversation and subscribe to Q5 Worldwide Ham Radio.
I drive past it somewhat regularly, as I live maybe 25 minutes away in Ohio. It's quite a sight from Route I-80, that's for sure. I've often wondered if the neighbors can hear voices in their appliances when he keys up. There's always antenna envy going past, but I'm happy that he's an active member and gives back to the community. Oddly enough, I also work about 2 miles away from DX Engineering, so I pop in there to check things out as well and it's always nice to chat with a fellow ham operator.
I hear them loud and clear, only 50 miles south. Tim's a treasure and the master. Live long Tim and spread the joy and knowledge.
Tim has a great station and he is an excellent contest team Manager. 73 from, Steve https://www.k0uo.com/k0uo "Rhombic Antenna Farm & test range" Miles of Wire In the Air and On the Air Daily.
