Yes, there really are laws regulating such things. Federal laws, and laws that vary by state.

    Google "oil drilling permit process".

The paperwork required is impressive by itself.

Thanks. It was just a passing curiosity, and it seemed like there just *had* to be something on the books. I just never thought about it.

Look, it's really as simple as this. If you could drill a hole all the way through the Earth, and jump in, you would indeed fall all the way through to the other side. You would be promptly apprehended by the Chinese, and held as a political prisoner, you would be tortured:eek:. Never try try to drill a hole through the earth. Just my 2 cents.:D

Problem being, when you first jump in, you reach terminal velocity in the normal fashion. Once you pass true center, gravity exerts its will and you slow down, eventually returning the direction you came, until entropy wins and you spend eternity in the center.

Unless, of course, you install a tube with a ladder on your way down, then back up again. Be sure to build a bar and gift shop at the center so you can recoup some of the cost.

Don't climb in the hole, silly. Use a 1/2 bit.

First time I heard/read the word "antipodes" there was a hint of pronunciation. Helpful, because I was about 7 years old and
I read it in a little poem by Ogden Nash, called "The Wombat".

The wombat lives across the seas
    Among the Far Antipodes.

He may subsist on nuts and berries
    Or, then again, on missionaries.

    His distant habitat precludes
    Conclusive knowledge of his moods,

But I would not engage the wombat
In any form of mortal combat.
